CiC Doc Savage

Doc Savage and the fabulous Five

Just under two years after The Shadow appeared on magazine racks, Doc Savage became the third pulp character to get his own magazine. The world met the Man of Bronze in a novel titled “The Man of Bronze,” March 1933.

Doc Savage was created by Street and Smith’s Henry W. Ralston, with help from editor John L. Nanovic, in order to capitalize on the surprise success of The Shadow magazine. It was Lester Dent, though, who crafted the character into the superman that he became.

Dent, who wrote most of the adventures, described his hero – Clark “Doc” Savage Jr. – as a cross between “Sherlock Holmes with his deducting ability, Tarzan of the Apes with his towering physique and muscular ability, Craig Kennedy with his scientific knowledge, and Abraham Lincoln with his Christliness.” Through 181 novels, the fight against evil was on. From a headquarters on the 86th floor of a towering Manhattan skyscraper, Doc, his five pals – Renny, Johnny, Long Tom, Ham and Monk – and occasionally his cousin Pat battled criminals the world over (and under) 12 times a year, from 1933 until early 1947; then the team’s exploits dropped to every two months until the final three quarterly issues in 1949.

In the Mid Seventies Doc Savage was published in Germany. I was reading about 50 of the Novels as a teen. When Chaos in Cairo came out I immediately thought that it would be cool to field Doc and his pals in CiC. So I decided to write some Character stats for the game. After some playtesting and a bit of a discussion with the CiC Yahoo group and Scot R. Pyle, the creator of CiC, the stats are more or less finished. Suitable minis can be found here.

Some more support for this great game from me. I designed printable character sheets of the following character write-ups. The sheets are designed to fit into any trading card protector sleeve. So print them, fold them and put them in a standard trading card protector sleeve. See the following example:

Clark “Doc” Savage Jr

Clark Savage Jr. was born on November 12, 1902 on a small schooner in a shallow cove at the north end of Andros Island, Bahamas. At the age of fourteen months, Clark Savage Jr. was entrusted to a board of scientists to begin the rigorous training which would prepare him for a very special purpose in life. The elder Savage held the belief that with the best training science could offer, his son could be moulded into a higher level of human being. A man of the highest morals with a mind and body developed to the greatest degree humanly possible for the purpose of bringing good to the world. He was determined to leave this world a legacy of hope.
Since the age of fourteen months, physical trainers worked with him daily. His diet was scientifically regulated to achieve optimum performance. He received training in various forms of athletics and self defense from experts in these areas. From the age of thirteen to nearly seventeen, he was travelling the globe. From one master to another he learned the skills he would require to meet his purpose. This is just some of what his boyhood travels included-

  • Winter survival techniques from fur trappers in the Canadian snow country.
  • Animal tracking and woodcraft from an Amazon indian tribe.
  • Flying instruction from the best pilots in the world at the time.
  • Diving and sea lore from Polynesians in the South Seas.
  • In India and Tibet he studied yoga, hypnotism, emotional control and how to block his mind from the effects of pain. He also trained extensively in the martial arts of personal combat.
  • In Indochina he learned how to prowl through the jungle with stealth by observing the movements of the great jungle hunters the Jaguar and Tiger.
  • In Africa he met his cousin, The Seventh Earl of Greystoke, who trained him in the art of using trees to travel above the jungle floor.
  • Learned vocal imitations and ventriloquism from the Great Lander
  • To develop his other senses, Doc spent several weeks in a school for the blind, eyes bandaged except for daily exercise periods.
  • He attended a school for the deaf & dumb where he learned sign language and lip reading.
  • Jimmy Valentine and Arsene Lupin taught him how to pick locks and open safes.

Concurrent to his training, he was studying the flora, fauna, geology, archaeology, history, culture and languages of all these regions.
After returning from the war in 1919, Doc entered medical school at Johns Hopkins University. He graduated and received a M.D. in 1925. He spent the following two years studying in Europe under the greatest neurosurgeons and psychiatrists. In the fall of 1927 he returned to New York and began his experiments in brain surgery.
In early 1933, all of the major preparations were complete. Doc was nearly ready to embark on the career he had spent his whole life training for. He had only to solidify everything in his mind. He spent considerable time at the Fortress Of Solitude, involving himself in both meditation and final preparation for the battles to come. In March of that year, everything galvanized in his soul. He was mentally, physically, emotionally, morally and spiritually ready!
Doc Savage is a criminal's worst nightmare. He is a walking fortress festooned with innumerable weapons. Even when stripped to his underwear and scrubbed clean he is as dangerous as nitro glycerine.
It is Doc's practice to never carry a gun, although he is an excellent marksman. He believes that the man who carries a gun develops a psychological dependence on it and soon becomes helpless without one. He prefers instead to rely on his wits and the various scientific gadgets he commonly uses.
Doc and his men routinely wear a light-weight bullet-proof union-suit of wire mesh mail that gives protection from the neck to just below the knees. This body armour can stop a slug from anything less than a high powered rifle.

Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Blodgett "Monk" Mayfair

"Last came the most remarkable character of all. Only a few inches over five feet tall, he weighed better than two hundred and sixty pounds. He had the build of a gorilla, arms six inches longer than his legs, a chest thicker than it was wide. His eyes were so surrounded by gristle as to resemble pleasant little stars twinkling in pits. He grinned with a mouth so very big it looked like an accident. "Monk!" No other name could fit him!"
(from Doc Savage, The Man Of Bronze, by Kenneth Robeson)

Like Long Tom, Monk is heavily involved with the research and development end of the Doc Savage organization. He spends most of his non-adventuring time in his personal lab, or with Doc at the penthouse lab. Monk has a great love for the science of chemistry, and he often spends weeks on end working on some new concoction. Monk invented the anaesthetic gas and countless other chemical tools used so frequently by Doc. The anaesthetic gas was first used in "The Man Of Bronze" adventure, to put red-fingered mayans out of commission. Later, Doc invented the glass balls for the gas, which enabled him to get out of jams on countless occasions.
Monk is one of those people who are walking contradictions. He is a brilliant chemist and a brutish animal. Circus Strong-Man feats were no problem for Monk. His strength comes the closest to Doc Savage's of any of the aides. He and Doc can both place a half-dollar coin between thumb and forefinger and neatly fold it in two.
Monk is kind. In fact, he has a small child-like voice, but when he fights, he roars. It is amazing that one man can make so much noise in a fight. Over bedlam, Monk's roaring can be heard. He has been know at times to stand in the middle of a fight and yell bloody murder merely for the sake of the noise.
Monk can also be cruel. He has no qualms about hurting or even killing villains. But deep down, we all know he is a kid at heart. Without a doubt, Doc Savage is his idol. He and Doc share a closer bond than do any of the other four aides. One gets the feeling that they really do love each other as brothers. Monk would die for Doc if it were necessary to save the Bronze Man. Yet, Monk is the only one who can go directly against Doc's orders and get away with it.
Monk is a connoisseur of feminine beauty. To most Monk is the homeliest man they have ever met. He has a face that can make babies cry. Monk's homely looks has an opposite effect on some women. The mother would probably find Monk charming. Certain women were attracted to him either by sheer animal attraction, or pity. But Monk doesn't care why a girl likes him, he isn't particular, especially if the girl is a looker. And Monk knows how to pick'em. He boasts that he has the prettiest secretary in New York in Lea Aster.
Of course, Monk's favourite past-time is getting Ham Brooks' goat. All Monk needs to do is mention anything having do with the subject Pork. In one adventure Monk sits quietly in Doc's office across from Ham reading a pamphlet titled "How To Raise Hogs”.

Brigadier General Theodore Marley "Ham" Brooks

"Slender, waspy, quick-moving, Ham looked what he was-a quick thinker and possibly the most astute lawyer Harvard ever turned out. He carried a plain black cane-never went anywhere without it. This was, among other things, a sword cane."
(from Doc Savage, The Man Of Bronze, by Kenneth Robeson)

Ham is not only known for his success in the courtroom and his association with Doc Savage. He has also achieved fame for his sartorial perfection. Ham loves clothes. He is considered by many to be one of the best dressed men in America
His bachelor quarters on Park Avenue are imposing without being flashy. The building itself has one of the plainest fronts on the avenue. The establishment is so exclusive that a great many Park Avenue residents do not themselves know that it exists. Ham's apartment consists of a bedroom with ample closet space, a study lined with cases holding law books and a small kitchenette. Near the door sits a tall case. The top of the case has niches for two dozen canes. The bottom of the case has a niche which holds a tiny bejeweled pocket flask. The flask holds the peculiar chemical concoction which Ham uses on his sword-cane blades.
These canes are the innocent looking black canes that Ham habitually carries. They contain swords made from blades of the finest Damascus steel. It is Ham's practice to coat the ends of the blades with a thick version of the anaesthetic so frequently used by Doc. With a quick twist, the cane comes apart. Ham has merely to prick his opponent with the blade and they go down almost immediately. Their unconsciousness will last for hours. In this manner, Ham is able to fight with a minimum amount of damage to his clothing.
In Doc Savages organization, Ham Brooks manages the legal and financial matters of Doc's vast empire, as well as all matters relating to real estate and properties. Doc trusts only his closest aides to control these matters and Ham is perfect for the task since he is not only a lawyer, but has also studied banking while in college.
Ham's dealings include the most sensitive and secret aspects of Doc's workings, such as the handling of gold shipments from Central America and the setting up and operating of the various front companies that Doc uses. Ham is very astute. When it comes to covert business deals he and Doc make Oliver North and Admiral Poindexter look like amateurs. Ham had already made a name for himself with the French army in the Great War as a master tactician and he loves to work covert deals. Perhaps this is why Monk refers to him so often as a shyster.

Colonel John "Renny" Renwick

"A giant who towered four inches over six feet. He weighed fully two fifty. His face was severe, his mouth thin and grim, and compressed tightly, as though he has just finished uttering a disapproving, "tsk! tsk! sound. His features had a most puritanical look. His arms were enormous, his fists bony monstrosities. His favorite act was to slam his great fists through the solid panel of a heavy door. He was known throughout the world for his engineering accomplishments, also."
(from Doc Savage, The Man Of Bronze, by Kenneth Robeson)

World famed Engineer Renny Renwick is known for two things- his association with Doc Savage, and his ability as an Engineer. He has a long puritanical face and if its expression is any indication, he has not a friend in the world. It is a peculiar trait of Renny's that he registers his emotions inversely. The happier he is, the more gloom is on his face. He stands 6'-4" tall and weighs in at 250 lbs. He knows every rough and tumble fighting trick in the book. His huge fists are composed of slightly less than a gallon each of bone, gristle and leathery hide and are as effective in a fight as two concrete blocks. Renny's favourite pastime is to use his monstrous fists to smash the panels out of doors. His boast is that his fists can plow through the panels of any wooden door made.
As part of his association with Doc, Renny serves as the group's construction manager. Renny handled the design and construction of all of the structures that Doc uses. This includes the Empire State Building, the Hidalgo Trading Company warehouse/hanger, the Crime College and Doc's Fortress Of Solitude. These structures were custom-built to Doc and early on Doc's father's requirements, and incorporate secrets that could not be revealed to the public. Renny, with his contacts in the construction industry was able to hand pick the men that worked on these jobs, men he knew he could trust to secrecy.
Renny oversees construction of the untold hundreds of hospitals that Doc charitably finances everywhere he goes. On top of all that, Renny is in such demand for his design and construction management skills that he is doing projects all over the globe. He has built hydroelectric dams, tunnels, bridges, airports and hospitals to name a few.
It is no wonder that Renny is often missing from Doc's adventures. This is a busy guy. He is constantly moving around. He has never been able to have a permanent home like some of the other aids. But that is the way Renny likes it. He loves to go to new places, stay for a year or so, build something big, and go on to the next one.
Regardless, Renny's greatest love is the kind of adventure he gets from his association with Doc Savage, and as much as he likes to build things, he hates it when he misses out on an adventure because he cannot leave a job he has in progress.

Patricia Savage

"The girl stepped back from the window. She had a wealth of bronze hair - hair very closely akin in hue to that of Doc Savage. She had been watching the brush that circled like a wall. She was tall; her form was modelled along lines that left nothing to be desired. Her features were as perfect as though a magazine cover artist had designed them. She wore high-laced boots, breeches, and a serviceable grey shirt. A cartridge belt was draped about her waist. From it dangled a heavy Frontier Single Action six-shooter - freely admitted by those who know to be one of the most reliable guns ever made. In the crook of her right arm lay a very modern automatic big-game rifle."
(from Doc Savage, The Brand Of The Werewolf, by Kenneth Robeson

In 1934, Pat is eighteen years old. She and her father have built a considerable homestead in the Canadian wilderness. She is an extremely capable and courageous young woman who, like Doc has a yearning for adventure and excitement. She gets just that in her first dealings with Doc and his men. She had heard about her cousin Doc Savage, but really did not believe all the amazing things that were said about him. She soon realizes that Doc is more amazing that she ever thought possible.

William Harper "Johnny" Littlejohn

"Very tall and very gaunt. Johnny wore glasses with a peculiarly thick lens over the left eye. He looked like a half-starved, studious scientist. He was probably one of the greatest living experts on geology and archaeology."
(from Doc Savage, The Man Of Bronze, by Kenneth Robeson)

William Harper Littlejohn, otherwise known as "Johnny," is best described as a long suit full of bones. He comes about as near to being a walking skeleton as a human being can come and still live. His forehead is unusually large, denoting a high degree of erudition. His clothing naturally does not fit him. In fact, he is the exact opposite of Monk. He is half a man wide and twice tall. His emaciated appearance leads Monk to remark that he looks like "an advance agent for a famine".
An unusual characteristic of Johnny's is his love for big words. He will never use a small one if he can find a big one to use. Johnny has been known to spout some real jawbreakers such as, "Preternatural eventuation is an amaranthine potentiality." His favourite expression is "I'll be Superamalgamated!"
Johnny is the only one of Doc' aids that holds no military rank, but like the others he did serve his country in it's time of need.
As a result of a wartime eye injury, Johnny was unable to see out of his left eye. Needing a magnifier for his work as an archaeologist and geologist, he chose to wear a pair of glasses with one clear lens over his good eye, and a magnifying lens over his blind eye. In 1934 as the adventure of The Man Who Shook The Earth began, Doc performed a pioneering new operation which restored Johnny's damaged eye. It was actually a cornea transplant. The first operation of its kind anywhere. Not wanting to give up his magnifier, Johnny had a monocle made with a magnifying lens, which he carries always attached to his lapel by a ribbon. One indicator of an imminent brawl is when Johnny is seen wrapping the monocle in a handkerchief and placing it in his pocket for safe keeping.
Johnny has a peculiar physical makeup that allows him to go for days without food. He does however; require more drinking water than do the others of Doc's men. Although he never engaged in any collegiate sports, his long legs make him an excellent sprinter.
In Doc's organization, Johnny often fills the function of the group's secretary of state. He, with Ham's help at times, handles matters with the United States government as well as foreign governments. Johnny is an excellent statesman and understands the protocols that it requires. His unique experience places him in a position of privilege with a great many governments and officials. Johnny's connections and experience make him the ideal man for working out the complex political and logistical problems Doc and his crew are constantly faced with as they travel the globe.

Major Thomas J. "Long Tom" Roberts

"Long Tom was the physical weakling of the crowd, thin, not very tall, and with a none too healthy appearing skin. He was a wizard with electricity."
(from Doc Savage, The Man Of Bronze, by Kenneth Robeson)

Long Tom Roberts is 5'-4" tall and weighs 140 pounds. He has a chalky, white complexion that somewhat resembles the colour of a mushroom. His hair is also a light colour. His front teeth are so large Monk calls them buck-teeth, one of which is gold. Being called the "physical weakling" of Doc's crowd is a deceptive statement. Many have made the mistake of looking at him and thinking him a push over. Despite his sickly appearance, he has never been known to be ill a day in his life. In fact, he can whip nine of ten men off the street. The tenth would wish he hadn't even started. When aroused he demonstrates such a fury that even the bullish Monk and Renny have been known to back off.
He received his nickname of "Long Tom" over an incident that occurred during The Great War. In defense of a small European village he loaded an old seventeenth century long tom cannon with scrap metal and successfully held of a group of attacking German soldiers. He was in command of a group of Army reconnaissance scouts that utilized a newly developed communication radio system designed by Long Tom himself.
Long Tom's electrical genius is matched by only a few. He received his formal education in Electrical Engineering and was found to be so gifted that he was afforded the opportunity to take his post-graduate training as an apprentice to both Edison and Steinmetz. His electrical patents run into the hundreds. And he has become the wealthiest of all of Doc's aids because of them. His lifestyle is miserly, though. He lives in a run-down building on Amsterdam Avenue in a small room off his basement laboratory.
For the most part, Long Tom is a misogynist (a woman hater) although he has a secret crush on Pat Savage, but who doesn't. He falls in love for the first time with Lam Benbow, in The Feathered Octopus, but apparently not enough to get married.
Over the years, Long Tom has developed and maintained a multitude of electrical and electronic devices and weapons that Doc and his men have used in their arsenal against evil. This tends to keep Long Tom busy in his lab, or in Doc's lab at the penthouse much of the time. He also shares Renny's situation of being called on to oversee major electrical projects around the world.
