Designers Notes
After reading Scott’s SuperSystem rules I was really tempted to play the game. The sheer possibilities of the system are amazing. I figured that it is virtually possible to play every genre, period or style of wargame with this rule system. The system is also very painter friendly. You can start playing with as little as 3 or 5 models each side. If you want more models on the table, just go for henchmen groups. I also own a lot of Darkest Africa minis from Foundry. I loved them immediately. Unfortunately most of the colonial rule systems are just not my taste. In addition you have to paint many, many miniatures just to start playing. So why not combine both interests and create an army list for Darkest Africa? The idea for SuperSystem Colonial was born. One of my problems was that I did not know so much about that historical period. So I read my history books and all the articles from Chris Peers in Wargames Illustrated to get an idea! In my opinion all the WI articles are really good. I also liked the rules from number 132 (with the exceptions mentioned above), but being a SuperSystem fan I was thinking that playing a campaign with SuperSystem Colonial would be even more fun. Based on them I wrote the army list. Especially number 131 was very helpful to understand the troops. All the unit description “flavour” texts are from “In Darkest Africa – Part One” by Chris Peers. Hopefully I did not violate any copyright law! The army list is designed to be used in really small games. Most of the units are really cheap – point wise. To play you need the SuperSystem rulebook, the Invasion expansion book and SuperSystem Colonial from me (you are reading them right now!). Have fun; ...and again, please excuse any funny wording! Being German it is sometimes difficult to find the right words.
One last thing, please make sure to check out Tom Weiss beautifully DA explorers. Definitely worth a look.
